Ocean may not be a rapper, but he’s certainly a part of that world, and his nakedly honest words weren’t an easy fit for the guarded and sometimes homophobic hip hop community. It was so much more than a matter of just “gay hype†though, because the sheer confessional power of the piece is what really disarmed people. I suppose we should expect it, as the seismic tremors of that admission to an unrequited homosexual love are still being felt in the world of urban music all these years later. He is a talented instrumentalist, singer and writer but above all, he is a human with a subtle, genius authority on relations. Each story is intricate and sometimes terrifying, but the virtuoso doesn’t lose sight of what I believe is his intent-greater understanding of the people we love and the ones we may believe are just too unrelatable. He also provide valid societal critiques, primarily how some have failed to relate to one another due to differences of religion, race and class. He is more than his romantic anecdotes, though. With the braggadocio of a new rapper and the gentility of a butterfly’s wing fluttering against a check, Ocean takes fresh lovers to the mountaintops and crushed exes into the caverns of solitude. Through his music, he explains his relationship with his emotions and the effect they have on others, spinning tales of love, hedonism and external complexities. Frank Ocean speaks to matters of the heart like few others.
